PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the startability of a system generating expansion stroke combustion in a cylinder in an expansion stroke to normally rotate a crank shaft after generating compression stroke combustion in the cylinder in a compression stroke to reversely rotate the shaft during startup of an engine. SOLUTION: At the time of generating combustion in a compression stroke, divided injection in the compression stroke is performed to gradually increase an fuel amount in a cylinder and to gradually change an air-fuel ratio in the cylinder into a rich direction. Furthermore, multiple ignition in the compression stroke is performed alongside the divided injection, thereby reliably igniting and generating the combustion in the compression stroke without missing a period in which the air-fuel ration in the cylinder falls within the range of a combustible air-fuel ratio by the divided injection. Thus, the combustion in the compression stroke can be normally generated even when the fuel injection amount for making the combustible air-fuel ratio can not be calculated with fine accuracy. Furthermore, divided injection and multiple ignition in an expansion stroke can be performed at the time of generating combustion in the expansion stroke. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
