PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TN cell comprising a nematic liquid crystal between substrates with an electrode and an aligned layer, which has positive dielectric anisotropy and an angle of torsion of substantially 90°between the two substrates with the electrode and the aligned layer, wherein reverse contrast phenomenon is suppressed. SOLUTION: The TN cell has the product d×Δn of 0.15-0.70μm, wherein d denotes the space between the substrates andΔn denotes the optical anisotropy of a liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition comprises (a) a compound of general formula I (wherein R is an alkyl group or the like; rings A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>are each independently cyclohexylene, cyclohexylene or the like; Z<SP>1</SP>and Z<SP>2</SP>are each independently a single bond, -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>- or the like; X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>and X<SP>3</SP>are each independently H or F; Q is CF<SB>2</SB>, OCF<SB>2</SB>, a single bond or the like; Y is H, F or Cl; and n is 0-2) and (b) a chiral doping agent so that the ratio d/p in a non-disturbed state (p is the pitch of the liquid crystal) is: 0.1≤d/p≤0.5, in order to improve the capability of gray tone display.
