PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery holding device for an automobile with improved workability of mounting a battery on a tray by offering simple construction. SOLUTION: The battery holding device for the automobile comprises the tray 1 for mounting the battery 3, a J-bolt 7 for engaging at its lower end with the tray 1, and a retainer plate 4 to be fastened and fixed to a body 5 abutting on the upper face of the battery 3 on the tray 1. A J-bolt support 10 is fixed to the tray 1, which has a hole 8 for engaging with the lower end of the J-bolt 7 with its bent tip 7a directed outward and an inclined face portion 9 provided at the upper part of the hole 8 for allowing the axis of the J-bolt 7 engaging with the hole 8 to be inclined to the outside of the tray 1.
