Photo-chemically cross-linkable polymeric materials containing aromatic azidosulphonyl groups linked to the polymer chain by urethane radicals may be prepared by reacting hydroxylcontaining polymers with aromatic isocyanates bearing azidosulphonyl groups, or with aromatic isocyanates bearing chlorosulphonyl groups and subsequently with sodium azide. Specified polymers are starch, cellulose, cellulose ethers and esters; copolymers of vinyl alcohol with conjugated diolefins, vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, olefins, styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters and nitriles, maleic anhydride, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, and polyvinyl alcohol; and hydroxy-containing polyesters, polyethers, polyurethanes, polyamides and epoxy resins. The products may be cast into films or coated on metals, paper, glass or plastics, and selectively exposed to form resists. Examples describe reaction products of saponified vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymers with (1) p-and (2) m-isocyanato benzene sulphazide; saponified vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copolymers with (3) p- and (4) m-isocyanato benzene sulphochloride and sodium azide, and (7) 2-chloro - 5 - azidosulphonyl phenyl isocyanate; (5) a 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane/epichlorohydrin condensate with p-isocyanato benzene sulphochloride and sodium azide; and (6) a partly hydrolysed cellulose acetate with p-isocyanato benzene sulphazide. |
