1,035,168. Differential gear; friction clutches. POWR-LOK CORPORATION. May 31, 1963 [June 14, 1962], No. 21836/63. Headings F2C and F2D. A limited slip differential for motor cars &c. comprises bevel sun gears 24 meshed by planet pinions 42 on a free cross-pin 36, the outer ends of which contact cam surfaces 50, 52, Fig. 2 (not shown), on pressure rings 46, 48 forced axially apart to engage clutches 62, 74 and lock-up the differential. As shown, the clutches 62, 74 are of the multi-disc type, but in a modification, Figs. 13-15 (not shown), coacting frustoconical friction surfaces are formed on the pressure rings and on rings fast with the driven half-shafts. The differential casing 15 may be of two-part construction, as shown, or alternatively may be of unitary construction, Figs. 5- 7 (not shown), with apertures through which the gears &c. are inserted during assembly. In the illustrated construction, washers 38 hold the cross-pin 36 within the casing, but in the modification of Figs. 13-15 (not shown), the cross-pin is entirely free, the pressure rings being turned angularly within the casing so that the ends of the cross-pin abut the inner casing wall.
|
