PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a cost by enabling many cold cathode lamps to be lit simultaneously by one piezoelectric transformer without using a ballast capacitor and to improve characteristics of the piezoelectric transformer. SOLUTION: The piezoelectric transformer has input electrodes provided on front and rear surfaces of a piezoelectric ceramic plate, and an output electrode provided on an end face not brought into contact with the input electrodes. The ceramic plate has a hexagonal shape, has the input electrodes on the front and rear surfaces of central parts, and has three output electrodes on three sides not brought into contact with the input electrodes to operate by contour swinging. An input section is polarized in a thicknesswise direction, and an output section is polarized in a lengthwise direction. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
