PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device improving the utilization efficiency of illuminating luminous flux with a simple constitution without causing a rise of the manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: The projection type display device is equipped with a DMD element 2 being a reflection type light valve, an illumination optical system 1 illuminating the element 2, and a projection optical system 3 projecting the image of the element 2 illuminated by the optical system 1 to a screen. The optical system 1 is equipped with a light source 4, a condensing lens group 6, a light intensity uniformizing element 7, and 1st and 2nd mirrors 8 and 9. The 2nd mirror 9 is provided adjacently to the lower side of the lens barrel 3c of the optical system 3, and the normal 9a of the reflection surface 9b of the mirror 9 forms a specified angleθwith the normal 2a of the surface to be illuminated 2b of the element 2.
