PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable square meter gauge for simply performing measurement; even if a package is fitted with a rope or cord, its opening part is closed improperly, it has a hole opened therein, the package is placed in an improper manner, it is inaccurately rectangular, or it is a transparent body; little consuming batteries, small-sized, easily portable, and allowing the dimensional numbers of an object to be measured accurately and rapidly only by touching the rectangular-shaped object several times. SOLUTION: A guide installed on an end of a measuring object 5 is irradiated with a longitudinal point light source 12, a reflector 12 is placed at a point C of the object 5, and reflected light is photographed by a longitudinal point light spot position sensor 10 to measure the position of the reflected light. Light strikes upon the longitudinal reflector 12 positioned at the end C of the object to form a light spot on the position sensor. Since this light spot position is in one-to-one relation with the distance to the reflector, the distance to the reflector can easily be found. This measurement is performed relative to longitudinal, lateral, and height directions, to calculate the square meter. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
