PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting the charge level of compressed waste which is charged into a high-temperature reactor of a gasifying/melting equipment reaching to a prescribed position, at excellent accuracy, stably for a long period of time. SOLUTION: An electromagnetic wave is transmitted using one electromagnetic wave transmitter in a water cooling jacket which is provided on a reactor wall under a charging inlet of the high-temperature reactor and which has a refractory at the side wall in the reactor. The electromagnetic wave is received using one electromagnetic wave receiver in a water cooling jacket which is provided on the reactor wall in the position facing to the electromagnetic transmitter and which has a refractory at the side wall in the reactor. The attenuation amount of the electromagnetic wave is measured. When the measured value of the attenuation amount exceeds a threshold value, it is judged that the compressed waste in the high-temperature reactor reaches to the prescribed level.
