PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make field sequential color display possible when a liquid crystal display using an antiferroelectric liquid crystal is driven by a static driving method. SOLUTION: In the switching period to turn on/off LEDs of three colors, a write period for turning pixels on-display or off-display is provided, and an erase period to transfer the liquid crystal in each pixel into an antiferroelectric state is subsequently provided. The potential of the common electrode is alternately set to V<SB>r</SB>and -V<SB>r</SB>. The potential of the segment electrode of a pixel in an on-display state when the erase period starts is alternately set to V<SB>p</SB>and -V<SB>p</SB>once each and then set to the ground potential V<SB>GND</SB>.
