PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease irregularity in the luminance and colors due to variance in the optical characteristics in spatial optical modulation means in a multi-plate type image magnifying apparatus. SOLUTION: The illumination light emitted by illumination optical means 2, 3 is divided into a plurality of spectral illumination light according to spectral characteristics to illuminate a plurality of spatial optical modulating means 12a, 12b, 12c and then the spectral illumination light is optically modulated by the respective spatial optical modulating means 12a, 12b, 12c into image light according to image information divided according to the spectral illumination light. In this modulation process, the plurality of spatial optical modulating means 12a, 12b, 12c are simultaneously illuminated by a plurality of spectral illumination light, while the spectral illumination light used for illumination is periodically switched in a plurality of sub-frame units constituting a single frame between at least two spatial optical modulating means 12b, 12c so that the spectral illumination light having the same spectral characteristics is optically modulated into image light by two or more spatial optical modulating means 12b, 12c.
