<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spotlight capable of further enhancing light use efficiency and of restraining temperature rise of an appliance while having a light distribution characteristic similar to a conventional one. <P>SOLUTION: A lamp 4 disposed in a housing 1 is so disposed that the major axis passing the center of its light-emitting part 4a generally coincides with an optical axis Cx of a convergent lens 3 mounted at the front end of the housing 1. A direct light blocking plate 8 having an opening part 8a is installed on the front side of the lamp 4. An elliptic reflecting mirror 5 is installed by surrounding the light-emitting part 4a of the lamp 4. The reflecting mirror 5 is so disposed that its major axis generally coincides with the optical axis Cx. A first focus F1 on the lamp side within both focuses F1 and F2 is so set as to generally coincide with the position of the light-emitting part 4a of the lamp 4.
