<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aluminum oxide-based sintered compact which combinedly exhibits three characteristics of wear resistance, strength and fracture toughness at high levels although it is a single sintered compact, and a process for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The aluminum oxide-based sintered compact is a double layer aluminum oxide sintered compact having high strength, high wear resistance and high fracture toughness, which has at least two-layer structure that a surface layer is a high strength/wear resistant layer comprising equi-axed crystals having fine grain sizes and the inside is constituted of a high fracture toughness layer comprising crystals having anisotropy. The method for producing the double layer aluminum oxide sintered compact comprises (1) preparing a laminated body by laminating an aluminum oxide material having a purity of ≥90% and containing an agent for inhibiting the growth of crystal grains and an aluminum oxide material having a purity of ≥90% and containing an agent for accelerating the growth of crystal grains, (2) subjecting the laminated body to atmospheric sintering so that the sintering characteristics and the formed body density of the two layers of the laminated body become each nearly same, and (3) sintering those simultaneously in one process. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
