<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for drawing a glass preform in which the function of an overhead transporting crane is specialized to be used for the transportation of the glass preform, a mechanism capable of normally being used for loading the glass preform on the drawing apparatus without being influenced by the operation condition of the other drawing apparatus is provided, the positioning operation in the loading of the glass preform is simplified or made needless, the operation rate of the drawing apparatus is improved and the productivity is increased. <P>SOLUTION: The glass preform drawing apparatus having a heating furnace 1 for heating and softening the glass preform 9, a supply mechanism 3 for supplying the glass preform 9 into the heating furnace 1 and a take-up mechanism 4 for taking up the drawn glass preform is provided with a glass preform housing part 2 above the heating furnace 1 and a storage mechanism part 6 for the glass preform. The storage mechanism part 6 has an arm 8 having a catching part 10 for grasping or catching the glass preform 9 and a mechanism for rotating and vertically moving the arm 10.
