摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element for an OCB mode provided with such characteristics as sureness of splay-bend transition (1), fast responsiveness (2), high reliability (3) and a wide nematic phase range (4) and a liquid crystal composition to be used therefor. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element for the OCB mode has a polarizer, an optical compensation layer and a bend oriented cell using the liquid crystal composition havingΔε, K<SB>33</SB>/K<SB>11</SB>andΔn in ranges 5≤Δε≤15, 1.0<K<SB>33</SB>/K<SB>11</SB>≤2.5 and 0.14≤Δn≤2.5, besides havingγ<SB>1</SB>,η<SB>2</SB>,Δn and K satisfying the formula and containing a compound with a specified substituted terminal phenyl structure and having a pretilt angle (θp) at upper and lower substrates in a range of 3.0°≤θp≤15.0°as a main component and the liquid crystal composition used therefor are provided.
