PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform which is uniform in a longitudinal direction and is free of fluctuation in its external diameter by improving the deposition rate of soot without lowering the manufacturing speed over the entire part in manufacturing a large size preform for the optical fiber by an OVD (outside vapor phase deposition) soot method. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the optical fiber preform by traversing the preform or an oxyhydrogen flame burner for depositing the soot in the OVD soot method, the large-sized preform for the optical fiber is manufactured by setting the traversing speed in such a manner that the speed increases at every traversing.
