PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately determine the capacity of a battery with a simple structure, and to inhibit the automatic stop of the engine under a condition that the engine can not be sufficiently cranked. SOLUTION: This battery diagnosing device comprises a multiphase motor for cranking the engine, the battery for supplying the driving power to the multiphase motor, a battery diagnosing means for determining the capacity of the battery, and a means for forbidding the engine stop in response to the predetermined stop condition, on the basis of a result of diagnosis. The battery diagnosing means includes a means for supplying the driving current to each phase with an energization pattern to minimize the driving power of the multiphase motor during the stop of the multiphase motor, and a means for determining the capacity of the battery on the basis of at least one of the battery voltage and the driving current in supplying the driving current.
