The gain of an amplifier in an IR receiving device which, to save energy, is cycled between an ON time and an OFF time, is varied over time to make detection of an incoming signal more reliable. A memory, preferably a volatile or dynamic memory, is used to store a value representative of the gain at the end of the ON time. The memory may be an integral part of the receiver circuit.
