PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for constructing at a low cost an underground railroad that aging people can use easily, while solving problems of constructing a new continuous grade separation: that constructing an elevated railroad as the only general construction method now available is expected to have difficulty in the future as lawsuits are being filed against a railroad company by local residents in urban areas; that shield tunneling method as an alternative has a drawback in that earth covering is too much, which means that constructing an underground railroad while reducing earth covering can be achieved only if construction work is done near a railroad currently in business. SOLUTION: An open-cut method is employed for the purpose of reducing earth covering to allow for the convenience of future passengers and geological features. A self-traveling excavator is used which is newly devised to avoid use of heavy machinery and reduce the period of construction. A construction procedure is proposed which secures open areas to prevent changes to construction sites necessitated by excavation in areas proximate railways and to prevent minor accidents.
