PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problems that skillfulness is required in order to determine parameters for calculating an initial value of a web water content and a dry-bulb temperature of air in a hood by experience and the quality of a product paper fluctuates in the method determined by the experience. SOLUTION: A method for predictively controlling a vapor pressure of drier of a papermaking machine comprises obtaining a regression line of a prediction error of the vapor pressure to a ratio of the production amount-changing amount and a regression line of a prediction error of the vapor pressure to a ratio of changing weight of an absolute dry weight from past papermaking exchange data and calculating parameters calculating an initial value of the web water content and the dry-bulb content and the dry-bulb temperature of the air in the hood from the inclination of these regression lines. As a result, since these parameters which have hitherto been determined by the experience can automatically be calculated, precise predicted values of vapor pressure are obtained.
