PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily adjust the molecular weight in producing a low-molecular-weight ethylenic polymer having an unsaturated bonds at the molecular end. SOLUTION: An olefin polymerization catalyst containing a transition metal compound represented by formula (I) is used for producing a low-molecular-weight ethylenic polymer comprising 81-100 mol% ethylene units and 0-19 mol% 3-4Cα-olefin units and having a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn), measured by GPC, of 1.1 or higher but not higher than 2.5 and a [η] of 1.7 (dl/g) or lower. One molecular end of the polymer has an unsaturated bond of a vinyl type or of a vinylidene type, and the total number of such unsaturated bonds per 1,000 carbon atoms is 14,000/Mw or higher.
