PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To synthesize an AlRq'<SB>2</SB>type aluminum compound while suppressing the formation of byproducts, and to obtain a derivative suitable for an OLED material from the compound. SOLUTION: The AlRq'<SB>2</SB>type aluminum compound represented by the formula äwherein, R is a≤6C alkyl group; R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a≤6C alkyl group, alkoxy group or dialkylamine group [NR'R" (R' and R" are each independently a≤3C alkyl group)]} is produced by reacting a trialkylaluminum (AlR<SB>3</SB>) with a 2-position-substituted-8- quinolinol (q'H) in a molar ratio of 1:2. The obtained compound is further reacted with an active hydrogen-containing organic compound to afford the derivative of Alq'<SB>2</SB>q type, or the like ((q) is an 8- quinolinolato ligand; and (q') is a 2-position-substituted-8-quinolinolato ligand).
