摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of efficiently compressing image data into a data amount not greater than a desired data amount by reducing unnecessary repetitions of re-scanning as much as possible, and to provide a control method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: Image data are inputted from a reader unit 2. The input image data are compressed in a color image encoder 9 in a control unit 3. In this case, during compressing the image data, the data amount of the image data after being compressed is estimated. If the data cannot be compressed into a data amount not greater than a prescribed data amount, the unit 2 is made to re-input the image data. On the other hand, a compression rate at the time of re-compressing the image data to be re-inputted is determined on the basis of the compression state of the image data. The re-input image data are re-compressed by using the determined compression rate. The image data compressed in this way are stored in a hard disk 11.
