PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can have both high picture quality and high durability and is free of density unevenness even when used repeatedly for a long period of time. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus having a photoreceptor, an electrostatic charging means of varying in electrostatic charging potential with the thickness of the photoreceptor, and an image processing means of performing half-tone processing for an input image is characterized in that: optical writing is carried out with a laser beam of≤35μm in beam diameter according to image data after the half-tone processing of≥200 lines per inch; the photoreceptor has a charge generating layer and a charge transfer layer on a conductive base and further has a protection layer containing a filler and having≥90 % in transmissivity to write light; and the total film thickness of the charge transfer layer and protection layer is≤20μm. A similar apparatus can be provided even when equipped with an electrostatic charging means whose electrostatic charging potential is not dependent upon film thickness variation of the photoreceptor, but constant.
