PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original imaging apparatus which carries documents having various kinds of thicknesses, images the originals stably, and can obtain beautiful images with high dimmer accuracy. SOLUTION: The original imaging apparatus is provided with a reading means 2a which reads the image information of an original, auxiliary scanning means 22 which changes the relative position between the sensor and the original image in the direction perpendicular to the main scanning direction of the sensor at a prescribed speed, illuminating means 2c which illuminates the image surface of the document passing through the means 22, back illuminating means 25 which makes the light from the means 2c reflect to illuminate the image surface from its back, optical transmission means which slidably contacts the document, and dimmer means for performing sensitivity adjustment of the image sensor. The apparatus is provided with a document equalizing means which can integrally move against the casing of the apparatus, while keeping the optical relations between the reading means, the illuminating means, the back illuminating means and the optical transmission means in constant.
