PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for detecting burning of electrode wheels of a lap seam welding machine, a method and device capable of quickly detecting the burning before the resulting weld defects are generated. SOLUTION: A pair of upper and lower eddy current sensors 21a, 21b are installed in a manner facing the surface of a pair of upper and lower electrode wheels 1a, 1b respectively. Then, through a change in the output voltage from the eddy current sensors 21a, 21b caused by a difference in a magnetic permeability between the copper-made electrode wheels 1a, 1b and the iron powder burnt on their surface, the generation of the burning on the electrode wheels 1a, 1b is detected by a burning discriminating device 22.
