A conveyor (10) for transporting material (M) includes a drive wheel (12) having a circumferential outer surface (18) and a plurality of openings (20) spaced circumferentially about the outer surface (18). A belt (14) includes an endless body (22) disposed about the drive wheel (12) and having two opposing side edges, a generally circumferential outer surface (26) configured to transport material (M) and a generally circumferential inner surface (28). A plurality of projections (30) extend from the belt inner surface (28), each projection (30) being separately disposeable within each one of the wheel openings (20) such that rotation of the wheel (12) drives the belt (14) to circulate along a centerline. The belt also includes at least one and preferably two substantially continuous circum­ferential surface sections located generally between the projections (30) and the belt edges. One or more support rails (16) each have a plurality of rollers (34), the rollers (34) being contactable with one of the belt continuous surface sections such that the rails (16) support the belt (14).
