Machine-readable labels indicating the membership of objects to a group are applied to the objects. The labels are machine read at an entry point and the identification data stored. At an exit point, the labels are machine read. The data read at entry and exit are compared. A second label, in the form of a dispatch pass may be carried by the owner of the luggage. A monitoring system and a control system are also claimed.
