A method for producing a chlorinated hydrocarbon substituted with an aromati c group which comprises agitating a mixture of a corresponding tertiary alcoho l such as 1,4-bis(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)benzene and hydrochloric acid, and then contacting the resulting organic phase with a hydrogen chloride gas; and a method for purifying a chlorinated hydrocarbon containing mixture produced b y the reaction of an aqueous solution of a metal hypochlorite with a protonic acid, which comprises reacting the mixture with an alkaline aqueous solution , to thereby convert the chlorinated hydrocarbon to an alcohol compound, followed by solid-liquid separation, and then chlorinating again the resulti ng solid component with hydrochloric acid. The former method allows the production of a chlorinated hydrocarbon substituted with an aromatic group having high quality, such as high purity cumyl chloride (1,4-bis(2-chloro-2- propyl)benzene, p-DCC) capable of being used as a cation polymerization initiator in high yield with good efficiency by an easy and simple way. The latter method allows the production of a chlorinated hydrocarbon compound having high purity in good yield.
