<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which has wide viewing angle characteristics, high display quality and a high aperture ratio and attains bright display. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a plurality of pixel regions each defined by a first electrode provided on the liquid crystal layer side of the first substrate and a second electrode provided on the second substrate and facing the first electrode via the liquid crystal layer. In each of the pixel regions, the first electrode is provided with a plurality of unit solid sections disposed in a first direction. When no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer, it takes on a vertical alignment state and further, when voltage is applied thereto, forms liquid crystal domains taking on a radially inclined alignment state on the unit solid sections due to oblique electric fields generated on the peripheries of the unit solid sections. A plurality of the pixel regions are arrayed in a matrix consisting of a plurality of rows in a second direction different from the first direction and a plurality of columns in the first direction.
