PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of a non-lighting phenomenon due to double factors of electric discharge and defective writing when the on/off states of continuous sub-fields (SFs) are switched in continuous gradations. SOLUTION: A light emitting pattern wherein the ON/OFF states of continuous SFs in the continuous gradations is prevented from being switched is selected as real gradations, gradations which can not be expressed are falsely expressed by error diffusion or dither, the non-lighting phenomenon due to the composite factor of electric discharge and defective writing is suppressed, the gradations are smoothed, and the quality of images is improved.
