PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To establish an accurate calculating expression for calculating an engine load by minimal experiment. SOLUTION: In a first stage, a load factor KL and an intake pressure PM at the time of a theoretical air/fuel ratio are measured for every operations wherein an engine rotation speed NE, a throttle opening TA, and a valve timing VVT are made different. In a second stage, an unknown coefficient of a quadratic function f (NE, PM, VVT) adopted as a model expression of the load factor KL is obtained from the above mentioned data by the least square method. In a thrid stage, the intake pressure is logarithmically transformed to a value Y based on the following expression Y=logäPM/(Pa-PM)} including standard atmospheric pressure Pa. In a forth stage, an unknown coefficient of a quadratic function g (NE, TA, VVT) adopted as a model expression of the value Y is obtained from the above mentioned data by the least square method. In a fifth stage, a calculating expression of the intake pressure PM is obtained by substituting the function g (NE, PM, VVT) into the above expression, and the calculating expression is substituted into the function f (NE, PM, VVT) to obtain the calculating expression of the load factor KL.
