PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring system which is capable of not only accurately monitoring the inside of a target zone but also performing high-speed processing and is inexpensive. SOLUTION: A monitoring system 1 for monitoring a monitoring target 28 by detecting a status of the monitoring target 28 within a three-dimensional monitoring space is provided with a plurality of light emitting elements 3 installed on one end face 2 of the monitoring space and a plurality of light receiving elements 5 installed on another end face 4 of the monitoring space corresponding to the plurality of light emitting elements 3 for receiving light from the corresponding light emitting elements, and the plurality of light emitting elements 3 and the plurality of light receiving elements 4 are located in the shape of matrix.
