A gyroscope includes a float assembly 10 containing a rotor 16 for rotation about a spin axis 5 by means of electric hysterisis motors 18, 20 the assembly 10 being mounted in a casing (not shown) containing a flotation fluid and being provided with transformer secondary windings 98, 128 at opposite ends of a longitudinal axis of the assembly, the windings 98, 128 co-operating with adjacent transformer primary windings 74, 122 located in cup-shaped end housings 12, 14, to locate the float assembly 10 electro-magnetically and to supply the electric motors 18, 20. The recesses in the end housings 12, 14 contain ferrite polepieces 70, 120 each having an annular recess to accomodate the respective primary transformer windings 74 or 122. Recesses in the ends of the assembly 10 also contain ferrite polepieces 96, 126 accomodating the secondary windings 98, 128. Current from the secondary windings is led by way of insulated conductive strips 114, 134 and arcuate strips 116, 136 to supply the motors 18, 20 through resilient contacts as 118, 138, 140 which are arranged so that electrical contact to the motors is automatically made when the float assembly 10, which comprises two cup-shaped halves 24, 26 is assembled together. Magnetic interaction between the transformer primary and secondary windings provides axial location of the assembly 10, and disc like pole tips, as 80, 106 are provided at each of the opposing faces of the polepieces 70, 96 and 120, 126 these having a plurality of concentric rings to define flux concentration paths between the opposed pins of tips to resist any radial displacement of the float assembly 10 relative to the end housings 12, 14.
