Cell search range in multi-operator networks

Specification data is obtained from a first cell search and used to determine a range for a second cell search by another control means of a different mobile telephone system. The frequency range of the second cell search is relatively smaller than the first network cell search. The two cell searches may be on separate operator networks and be GSM or third generation. The memory units for storing the search information may be incorporated inthe telephone body or detachably mounted. The specification data obtained may be the MCC (Mobile country code.) No cell search may be conducted when th specification data indicates that the mobile is currently located outside the service area of the operators.
