The carcass (10) is made partly of one rubber compound and between the tread and the tire air chamber (18) there is a buffer layer (22) made from a second compound. At 60 degrees C the second compound has reduced damping characteristics compared to the first compound. The second rubber compound has a resilience not less than 25%, preferably 75-85%, higher than the first compound, in particular at 20-60 degrees C. Loss factor in the second compound is reduced a not less than 50% compared to the first compound, particularly at 60 degrees C. Typical loss factor at 60 degrees C is 0.017-0.021. Other properties of the second compound include a density less than that of water and preferably 0.98-0.9950 kg/dm3; Shore A hardness of 35-45 and tear strength of 18-22Mpa. Buffer layer thickness is 4-6mm. A typical construction of the tire comprises the outer tread layer (12) of the first compound, a buffer layer (22) of the second compound and a third layer (13) of the first compound incorporating one or more reinforcing fabric layers (21). |
