Novel insecticidal phosphonic acid esters containing silicon, of the general formula in which R is an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting O,O-dimethyl (1 - hydroxy - 2,2,2 - trichloroethyl) - phosphonic acid ester and a trialkyl silane of the general formula ClSi(R)3 in the presence of an acidbinding reagent. Typical acid binding reagents are alkali metal hydroxide, alcoholates or carbonates and tertiary organic bases. Particularly good solvents for the reaction are aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons or simple and cyclic ethers.ALSO:Insecticidal and acaricidal preparations comprise, as the active constituent, phosphonic acid esters containing silicon of the general formula:- where R is an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The compositions are used as pesticides in plant protection against sucking and biting insects, Diptera and mites. The active compounds are made up into solutions, emulsions, suspensions, powders, pastes, and granulates. These may be prepared by mixing with extenders, i.e. liqiud or solid diluents or carriers, optionally with the use of emulsifying agents and/or dispersants. Preferred liquid diluents include aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, paraffins, alcohols, amines and amine derivatives, dimethyl sulphoxide and water. Preferred solid diluents are ground natural minerals such as kaolins, clays, talc or chalk, and ground synthetic minerals such as silicic acid and silicates. Preferred emulsifying agents are non-ionic or anionic and dispersants include lignin, sulphite waste liquors and methyl cellulose. The formulations contain 0.1 to 95% by weight of active compound and application is effected in the normal manner.
