The air feed to a rectification column 30 having been compressed to at least 125 p.s.i. and cooled and freed of water vapour and carbon dioxide in reversible paths 41 of a heat exchanger cooled by counter-flowing separated nitrogen and oxygen is divided into a major portion which is expanded in a turbine 16 thus producing cold and is added to the minor portion before passing to the high pressure stage of the column 30. Feed air leaving exchanger 42 is partly liquefied in a liquid oxygen cooled exchanger 18 and air vapour issuing from a phase separator 27 is warmed in a path 15 of exchanger 42 prior to expansion at 16 and subsequent addition to the liquid air withdrawn from separator 27. In a modification air leaving the cold end of exchanger 42 is divided into a first portion which is warmed and expanded at turbine 16 and into a second portion which is in part liquefied and thereafter added to the expanded portion prior to being fed to the column.
