The invention provides a method and apparatus for identifying a test signal. According to the invention, this process of identification involves selecting a test signal sequence (32), dividing the test signal sequence into segments, generating respective test indicators for successive segments of the test signal sequence to form a test profile (36), selecting a master signal sequence (12), dividing the master signal sequence into segments, generating respective reference indicators for successive segments of the master signal to form a master profile (14), comparing the test indicators and the reference indicators for successive corresponding segments of the test and master profiles (38), determining whether the comparison yields a match (40), and generating a corresponding indication (44).
