In apparatus for assisting respira- ' tion, gas is supplied during inhalation and cut off during exhalation by a supply valve 5 controlled by a diaphragm 16 in response to pressures in a duct 12 which supplies gas to the patient, the diaphragm being separated from the duct by a partition wall 16a having a non-return valve 14 which opens for a short period when "the patient commences to inhale, so that the diaphragm is exposed to a reduced pressure and opens the supply valve 5, and a valve 17 controlled by a second diaphragm 21 to open vNhen a predetermined positive pressure is .reached-in in the duct, so that"the diaphragm-is exposed to the positive pressure and:closes the supply valve 5. When the supply valve 5 is opened gas flows from a supply 1 through a valve -7 to a mouthpiece 8, by way of an ejector 35 having an air inlet valve 36 and the gas conduit 12 and also by way of an atomiser 33. Supply gas also flows to the control chambers of the valve 7 and a vent valve 27 for the duct 12 thus closing the valve 27 during the inhalation phase. When the valve 17 opens in response to a predetermined rise in pressure in the gas conduit, the diaphragm 16 moves to close the supply valve 5 thus terminating the inhalation phase. The conduit 12 is then vented to atmosphere through the valve; 27 so that the second diaphragm 21 closes the valve 17 and the patient is allowed to exhale naturally to atmosphere through a combined inhalation and exhalation valve 10. |
