The invention relates to an efficient handling of a buffer overflow which is achieved by means of a method for the asynchronous transmission of data in cells (2 to 6) of packets (7) of the same packet length, by means of a connection (8,9,10), whereby each cell (6) of a packet (7), arriving in a buffer (14) along the connection (8,9,10), is monitored for whether a given buffer threshold for said buffer (14) is exceeded. In the case where the buffer threshold for the buffer (14) is not exceeded, the cell (6) is forwarded, whilst in the case where the buffer threshold of said buffer (14) is exceeded, the cell (6) is discarded without forwarding and a flag (EPD) is established. The flag (EPD) remains until the last cell (2) of said packet (7) has arrived in the buffer (14) and been discarded, whereby, so long as the flag (EPD) is active the arriving cells (6,5,4,3,2) of said connection are discarded. |
