PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a data volume required for generation of a gradation control signal. SOLUTION: An electro-optical device uses a gradation control signal GCP to perform gradation display of pixels. The gradation control signal GCP has the level varied at a point of time when a period corresponding to each gradation has elapsed after the start of a selection period (1/2 horizontal scanning period) in which a scanning line 200 is selected. A gradation control signal generation circuit 14 generates the gradation control signal GCP on the basis of a gradation prescribing bit string GPB. The gradation prescribing bit string GPB consists of bits which correspond to a plurality of points of time within the selection period in time series and indicate whether each of these points of time is a point of time when a period corresponding to some gradation has elapsed after the start of the selection period or not.
