PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a clear image on an image display device which is small in size and provided with an illumination optical system and has a high optical utilization efficiency. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a transmission type image display element 5 and a relay optical system 4 which is used to enlarge a displayed image on the element 5. The system 4 is constituted of at least two optical elements. At least one of the elements is made of eccentric prisms 11 and 12 having at least three optical surfaces. At least two optical planes of the prisms are constituted of rotatively unsymmetrical surfaces. An optical member 3 is arranged in the vicinity of an image forming plane of the system 4 in order to observe an image. An illumination optical system 6 is provided for the device to illuminate light beams from an optical source 7 onto the element 5. The system 6 is constituted of an optical element having at least one positive refractive power and is arranged at the back surface of the element 5. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
