The internal combustion engine has a cylinder sleeve (6) which by an upper end face (8) lies gas-tight directly on the cylinder head bottom (10) and is in direct physical contact with the cylinder head (2). Both the upper end face of the cylinder sleeve and cylinder head bottom in the region of the cylinder sleeve are formed concentric to the cylinder axis (11), and preferably have tool marks concentric to the cylinder axis. Each cylinder sleeve is screwed directly to the cylinder head by preferably at least eight bushing screws (7).
