The top plate for a control switch in a car is made from transparent material. It has a first coating on the reverse side with gaps forming a symbol showing the purpose of the switch. A second coating of a different color to the first is then applied to it, so that the color shows through the gaps. An independent claim is included for a method for making the plate.
