<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink for ink jet recording, having high jetting stability and further capable of forming such a picture image as to be excellent in color and to exhibit excellent image preservability under a severe condition. <P>SOLUTION: This ink for ink jet recording contains water, a water-miscible organic solvent, and a coloring material expressed by general formula (1) (X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>4</SP>are each -SO-Z, -SO<SB>2</SB>-Z, -SO<SB>2</SB>NR<SB>1</SB>R<SB>2</SB>, sulfo, -CONR<SB>1</SB>R<SB>2</SB>or -CO<SB>2</SB>R<SB>1</SB>; Z, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aklenyl, aralkyl, aryl or heterocycle; Y<SP>1</SP>to Y<SP>4</SP>are each a monovalent substituent; M is H, a metal, metal oxide, metal hydroxide or metal halide; a<SP>1</SP>to a<SP>4</SP>are each an integer of 0-4, provided that all of a<SP>1</SP>to a<SP>4</SP>are not 0 at the same time; and b<SP>1</SP>to b<SP>4</SP>are each an integer of 0-4).
