Device (1) used in the disposal of dangerous or high-energy material comprises a housing (2) in which the materials are subjected to a reaction under controlled conditions to produce safe end products, and a moving bed moving from the top to the bottom of the housing. The bed is in dynamic equilibrium between the feed of a bulk material and the material for disposal at one end and the discharge of a mixture containing bulk material and the residual materials from the reaction at the other end. A hot gas stream flowing through the moving bed in a vertical direction at least locally warms the bulk material. The bulk material contains at least two fractions. A first fraction (21) consists of particles having smaller dimensions and a second fraction (23) consists of particles having larger dimensions. The first fraction surrounds the second fraction. The movement path of the material for disposal leads through the second fraction. Preferred Features: The bulk material consists of balls made of a suitable steel alloy.
