<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization conversion element which realizes a projection type liquid crystal display having improved display quality in black display even in a high contrast condition, and to apply the polarization conversion element to a projection type liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: The polarization conversion element for the projection type liquid crystal display is provided which has an anti-reflection layer 25 formed on one side face of a linearly polarizing plate 21 and is subjected to heating treatment at 50 °C or higher in this state. The polarization conversion element is usually used by being laminated on such a transparent substrate 30 as glass on the opposite side of the face on which the anti-reflection layer 25 is formed. The heating treatment may be given at a state that the linearly polarizing plate 21 is laminated on the transparent substrate 30. A retardation plate 23 can be inserted between the linearly polarizing plate 21 and the transparent substrate 30.
