There are pairs of running rails (8) on either side of the channel for the logs (4,5). Carriages (1-3) can move along the rails, carrying clamps (10) with toothed jaws (14) which may grip the ends of the logs. The logs are gripped alternately by clamps on the right-hand and left-hand pairs of rails, allowing return of one pair of clamps while the other pair is moved forward with a log. The carriages with clamps move the logs forward into a working station (6) with saws.
