PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization selective film contributing to the improvement in the use efficiency of light in an absorption type polarizing plate and having a wide wavelength region showing the polarization selective function.

SOLUTION: The polarizing selective film consists of liquid crystal molecules having a helical structure and the film selectively transmits specified polarized light and selectively reflects other polarized light. The polarization selective film features that: the axial direction of the helix in the helical structure is approximately in the normal direction of the film plane; the angle between the axial direction of the helix and the major axial direction of the liquid crystal molecule is 5° to 85°; and the film has a region where the helical pitch of the liquid crystal molecules varies in the thickness direction.
